Digitization of the Schengen visa application procedure – Public consultation

The European Commission has launched a public consultation regarding the digitization of the Schengen visa application procedure, targeting visa applicants, representatives of the transport industry and other interested stakeholders.

For some years, a progressive digitization of the visa procedures’ process for the entry in the Schengen area has been underway, in order to make it easier, faster and more efficient, both for the applicants and for the consulates. To date, part of this procedure has already been digitized through the VIS platform, although two fundamental steps still must be carried out in printed form: the submission of the visa request and its related documents, and the issuing of the so-called sticker to be attached on the travel document.

Nonetheless, further change is going to happen: the EU Commission declared its intention to make the visa procedure fully digital by 2025, with the introduction of the possibility to present the visa application, as well as to obtain the visa sticker through an online portal. For this purpose, the Commission and the EU Agency LISA will undertake the testing of an “offline” prototype of a unified European portal for the visa applications starting from the third quarter of 2021, together with the development of a pilot project for a digital Schengen visa (e-sticker).

In the context of this testing phase, the Commission has launched a public consultation targeting visa applicants, representatives of the transport industry and other interested stakeholders, which will be opened till the 3rd of June and accessible through this link.
